The CoE MECS is of key strategic importance to all four institutions. The TU Wien, the University of Vienna, the University of Innsbruck, and ISTA identify fundamental research in materials and energy as core missions. They have invested and built in these areas through hiring staff and faculty and investing in research infrastructures. By joining forces, they leverage their individual strengths and build a sustained research effort that is highly visible internationally and has the clear societal goal of helping Austria achieve the energy transformation.
In setting up the Center this way, MECS draws from previous successes. Many MECS PIs were/are involved in successful large yet smaller collaborative projects, as listed here
